Robert Scott's Story

Life Check "My Pages" section for email addr Scott, Robert, or Bob? My full name is Robert Scott Lewis and in high school I was known as Robert or Bob. Since then, I have used my middle name. I made the switch because I was tired of being 1 of 3 Bobs in any room. I went on to earn a Masters of Business Administration and a Masters of Law and worked for 30 years as a CPA. I retired in 2005 at the age of 55. I now alternate between my roles as house-spouse and world traveler. My average-Joe credentials stop there. Though only a couple of classmates knew it, I was an out-of-the-closet gay man even in high school. In college, I became an activist and spokesman for the gay and lesbian community, founding president of the University of Washington Gay Students Association. I also served as treasurer/board member for Seattle Counseling Service for Sexual Minorities, business manager for Stonewall Rehabilitation Center, and founding board member of Metropolitan Community Church Seattle. In 1973, the University of Washington Daily published an article titled “The Life and Gay Times of Scott Lewis”. For the rest of my college years, I was known as Mr. Gay Lib. With MBA in hand, I went to work for Arthur Anderson in San Francisco. Arthur thought they were getting a mild-mannered accountant but quickly discovered they’d gotten a firebrand. It was a stormy 2 years and I moved on as soon as I earned my CPA license. I spent the next 6 years in the law department at the world headquarters of Bank of America. They were a bit better prepared to handle me, but throughout my time there, I was regarded as one of the most colorful members of the department. During this time, I completed a Masters of Law, served as treasurer of the Pride Foundation of San Francisco, and as a member of the mayor’s taskforce on gay and lesbian people. Most importantly, I meet my life partner, Sid Forman, at a New Years party on December 31, 1977—we’re still together after almost 30 years. Sid and I lived together in San Francisco from the spring of 1978 until the summer of 1983. By then, we had decided we wanted a quieter life than SF could afford us. We set our sights on Seattle, Sid took a job as a health inspector for the county (he’s still there), an...Expand for more
d I join a small CPA as a tax partner. We’ve been in Seattle ever since. Life has been quieter in Seattle; however, I have continued my work for the gay and lesbian community. I served a second time as treasurer of the Seattle Counseling Service and spearheaded the drive for United Way membership. We became the first-ever gay and lesbian agency to be granted membership in United Way. My fellow board member, Jan Hesslien, and I were interviewed and written up in the national media. As an active tri-athlete, I helped found Team Seattle and the Northwest Gay/Lesbian Sports festival and became a board member of Gay Games III—Vancouver. In the early 1991 I returned to my old passion for music (I had studied bassoon, piano, and organ in college). In the following years, I held seats as 1st or 2nd bassoon in several community symphonies. In 1998, I founded the Rainbow City Band, Seattle’s gay/lesbian community concert & marching band. The band is now in its 10th season and I am extremely proud of all we have accomplished. In 2005, I presented Sid with a financial analysis that showed that both of us could retire. Surprisingly, he got upset. As men, we are taught to base our identity on “What do you do (for work)?” I was ready to give up the label, but he wasn’t. After several months of negotiation (arguing), I retired and he reduced his hours. Throughout our lives together, we have traveled a great deal. Now, we try to make one or two big trips a year. 2006 found us in Greece and Turkey for 4 weeks. In 2007, we have been to China for 3 weeks. In January 2008 we plan to take a 2-week cruise out of Tahiti to celebrate our 30th “anniversary”; and we plan to be in France in September. It a good life-Hope yours is too.
